Ergonomic Office Chairs

Ergonomics relates to the study of the interface between the human body and the task that the person has to perform. In the office workspace, this relates to chair design and function, desk configuration and the layout of the work area to provide an environment which optimises user comfort, support and performance.

.....fully adjustable so it can be adapted to fit the size and shape of the individual but importantly it must work with the user, to follow their movements and reflect their style of working. Chair manufacturers employ different principles to encourage a good posture with 'Active Sitting' and at FineBack we represent three of the Best ergonomic office chair manufacturers, RH Chairs, HAG and BMA Axia.

Choosing the best ergonomic office chair for you will help to relieve problems with neck, shoulder and back pain and lead to a more comfortable and effective time at work. Whilst some people purchase these chairs for bad backs, many are interested in looking after their posture for the long term, to avoid the cumulative effects of poor posture. If you need help in selecting the best ergonomic office chair, then you can visit the showroom where we have a wide range of ergonomic chairs on display. Alternatively you can contact us to discuss your particular needs and any back care issues that you need to address.

We enjoy working with our customers to discover the ergonomic chair that works best for you as we know that it can considerably improve comfort and well being in the office. We have set out below the key features that you should look for in an ergonomic office chair.

Features of an Ergonomic Office Chair

Height adjustable seat - To ensure that feet are firmly placed on the floor with the hip joint slightly higher than the knee. Sometimes an adjustable footrest may be required to achieve correct alignment with the desktop.

Seat depth adjustment - The seat pad position can be moved forward or backward, dependent on upper leg length. Correctly adjusted seat depth evens the pressure along the thigh and should allow for small gap behind the knee for chair articulation and not to restrict circulation.

Back height adjustment - A useful feature to engage the lumbar area of the back cushion into the inward curve of your spine for optimum back support.

Inflatable lumbar - An option on some good ergonomic office chairs to increase the depth of the lumbar support, beneficial where the user has a deep lumbar curve.

Backrest angle adjustment - Preset to a comfortable working posture where the back is supported along its length. Avoid setting the angle too far back and then leaning forward as back support is lost.

Height adjustable armrests - Armrests should be adjusted to support shoulder and neck with a neutral posture, i.e. armrests should bear weight without hunching shoulders

Width adjustable armrests - Adjust to maintain comfortable arm position from body without stretching, placing the forearm over the centre of the width adjustable armrest

Rotational armrests - Armrest tops can be swivelled inwards to give greater forearm support when operating at the keyboard. All RH chairs can have these armrests.

Adjustable neckrest - Can be very beneficial for user with neck pain and shoulder strain. When correctly set, the neckrest will only be employed when user reclines back to vary sitting position. Neckrest takes the weight of head and neck allowing muscles to relax and relieve tension.

Seat Mechanism - Chair manufacturers employ different techniques to achieve good back support and suitability for the individual is best determined by trial. RH Chairs use the 2pp principle, with a knee tilt action and free float movement. HAG office chairs have a centre pivot action that encourages more flex at the ankles when reclining and this promotes activity and circulation. Ergonomic chairs from BMA Axia have a mechanism that incorporates the principles of biomechanics to achieve a relaxed, upright sitting position.

In addition to our premium ergonomic office chairs, we also supply a number of good quality Task Chairs suitable for general or home office use. These chairs offer a cost effective alternative and attract the same high standards of service and support.Close.
